The Social Consequences of the 1989 Revolutions

I was in Eastern Europe the summer after the Wall fell and I remember the euphoria and the feeling that communism was over. And it's sad to see that all of the goodwill and the spirit of those early years that has been squandered in the last 30 years. There are many, many people living in the region today who do not have the standard of living that they enjoyed in 1989 or 1991 when communism ended. That's after 30 years of freedom and democracy and capitalism and free markets  and all the promises that those things were supposed to bring.
