The syrenaeans had amassed one of the largest armies in their city's history. The infantry nucleus consisted of citizen hoplites, part time soldiers and trained to fight in dense palanx units. Both sides intended the clash to be decisive with both staking all on victory. But as soon as the soldiers saw their shield wild disintegrate, all thought of further fighting evaporated.
