Many psychologists and evolutionary theoris religion as, to some extent, a biological adaptation. But i'm actually quite sceptical, i think. For one thing, as you know, group selectionist arguments run into some serious problems. A for another, i think a lot of religion could be explained as act, as an accident. And this doesn't mean to derogate religion anything. In the same sense, a lot of morality is an accident too, but it isn't a direct adaptation. It's a by product of different ways we think.
