Is There a Pressure on the Roman Frontier?
There are clearly major changes going on beyond the frontier. The appearance of the huns in the late three seventi seems to be a major catalist for changes, particularly amongst the goths. We can't really understand from their prospectof what they want to do. It's also very difficult to work out just how many of them there may have been because the only numbers that we get in ancient sources are notoriousl unreliable. But seeing it as a sort of uncontrolled immigration and mass immigration is problematic,. not least because it starts to evoke all sorts of emotional responses about the roman empire.
