Is There a Difference Between Commentating for an English Audience and an American Audience?

Is there a difference between commentating for an English audience and for an American audience? I believe, and this was told to me fairly firmly when I joined NBC, that that's what America wants from the Premier League. If I try to talk particularly down to Americans, as if Americans needed the offside rule explaining twice a game, I have the feeling bricks will be thrown at the screen.
