The Longest Trends in Japan's History

Historians often want to get you to take a look further back. So i asked chris about the longer trends in japanese society that had been at play for several decades by the time we reached 19 forty one. There was always this concern that if you open up to trade and diplomatic relations,  you're going to struggle to do that without putting your own culture at risk. I think by the late 19 thirties, those cultural concerns are being exploited by people in japan idealogues who want greater power for themselves. And they can point to what certainly militarists would say is a reputation for putting the good of the nation first.
