I knew publishing kind of bought into, it's a monolithic group at that time. And I knew that wasn't true from my own background in my family. My mom and dad both would be considered Latino, Hispanic, whatever you want to call it,. But they're so different. Their backgrounds could not be more different. So I thought about it again, being kind of strategic how can I give publishing what they think they want that doesn't exist? By the end of the book, they'll realize that the thing they thought they wanted didn't exist. Then also that book will accomplish what they want in a way," she says.
