The Difference Between Artist and Soldier
I've been kind of nucleating these ideas for a while. About six or seven years ago, I got a call and if I would join President Obama's Council of Science Advisors on a project to think about the future of national research. So Vannevar Bush was the guy who probably more than any other single person made a difference in turning the course of World War II. And when you mention artists and soldiers, that's in many ways that was his realization. It wasn't exactly his language, but it's sort of hard to appreciate this now with all those sort of WWII movies.
