values can enter into scientific practice, but it depends on where you draw the lines. If we go purely instrumental, then a whole pile of science which have been very helpful to us wouldn't have been funded in the first place. There's an interesting kind of question there about how we weigh up different kinds of values and whether or not we think that science should be done for purely instrumental reasons.
