The Idea of Thought

An idea of thought is that which is formed by the proper force of the mind from ideas of the imagination, resembling figures in a calculation. These ideas are called rational, intellectual and immaterial; but they are nevertheless regarded as simple ideas. The mind distributes and divides these its own ideas again into some other order or rational form, and thus deduces another anaysis and equation. From these, hence arises a still more perfectly rational and intellectual idea. Thus thought becomes more sublime and purer, and approaches nearer to pure intellect. In no other way can we be elevated to a knowledge of the pure intellecta thus, not by speech, or the use of words, or of ideas
