Dr. John White Webster was a graduate from Harvard Medical School, and also a professor there. He had stopped practicing as a doctor and turned to teaching chemistry and geology instead. But he couldn't pay Parkman back for the gem collection that he'd mortgaged three times. His brother-in-law told Parkman about what his neighbor was trying to pull on him. Ephraim Littlefield became their prime suspect since he lived in the school's basement where he could procure dead bodies at any time of day or night. The police were able to go through the entirety of Webster's lab before they found human pelvis inside the furnace.
