The Academic Project of American Nursing

By the 1960s, nurses who then had also undergone advanced clinical training at the master's degree level also took on new advanced specialty practice roles. By emphasizing a health perspective, rather than a disease perspective, by considering the patient holistically and prioritizing the agency of the patient in shaping their health, nursing and its science sort of stand apart from the reductionist model of medicine that emphasized disease, diagnosis, and cure. And so this brings us to the other two components of nursing's academic project.
