Mediaeval clergy could not be tried in civil courts. Catholic church, they had to be tried in church courts. Clergy don't have the power to forgive sins. Only christ has that power. And ministers are replaceable if they don't do their job properly. If you don't marry, there's something wrong with you. They're subservient to secular rulers. Poor relief is through state tax ra than through Church charity or a confraternitis. This is the process of turning europeans into good christians by protestants and catholics too.
