The Importance of Potatoes in Ireland Before the Great Famine

First potatoes were brought to ireland in the late sixteenth century, early seventeenth century. Initially potatoes came and they were the food of the middle classes. But as i serd you, through centuries of colonization, many people had been dispossessed of their land. And what was very quickly apparent was that potatoes were well suited to conditions in ireland. They grew prolifically, even in the poorest of soil. The irish moderate climate was very well suited to their growth.
