Greece was an independent state of fewer than one million people at the beginning. It was overshadowed and threatened by the still powerful, and still enormously much larger ottoman empire. The strained relations that exist to day between greece and turkey are a legacy of that situation. But it is perfectly possible for greeks and turks to find ways of finding common ground.
