The Origins of the Temples
The temples were important economic institutions. They owned a lot of land, they owned assets such as boats and quarries. The priests themselves, it depended on the level of the temple for a great state temple. It would probably be a hereditary position. Your father was a priest, you would become a priest. And in a way, anybody could be a priest because when your parents were dead, if you made offerings to them, you were myself acting as a priest.
