You Bring Home the Bacon

If you earn money for the family, you can say that you bring home the bacon. For example, now that Harry has been made redundant, it's up to me or his wife to bring back the bacon. Can you remember a more elegant way of saying you're on the dole or unemployed? If you did listen to last week's episode and you definitely should have, if you didn't, why not? To be between jobs is a nice way of saying to be unemployed.
