The Wild West of Video Encoding

Video encoding is actually a search problem. So how codecs work is that they find similarities within frames of a video and also across frames. And then the encoder will jot down the instructions to recreate each frame. H.264 specification tells you how to take these instructions and reproduce an image. But encoding is all search based and a lot of it is proprietary and patent filled.
