West berlin was a vibrant, very modern, very colorful city. It still had war time ruins and people had soot of poor, cheap clothing. The place smelt because of the exhaust fumes from the two strote cars which they used for heating. On the other hand, it was actually doing better than most of the neighbouring communist countries.
