Was There a Saxon Saxonic Invasion or a Peaceful Migration?
In the fifth and sixth century there probably was a significant degree of migration from northern part of mainland europe. This had begun before the end of roman rule, in the context of people who were serving in the roman army. And we also need to reckon with a lot of change within britain itself. These group identities would then most likely have been forged anew out of a few kernels of tradition in england itself. So these are new entities formed by people coming in from divers backgrounds. There's also a lot of occulturation, a people who'd been in britain already, and britons and others took on the language and identity of the incomers.
