The Importance of Understanding Your Competitors

In the digital world, your competitors are those who also have access to similar data and they may not be the same forms. Selling a product and getting data from customers is a very different proposition. I call it the incumbency advantage in the digital world. So Nike has a natural advantage over a smaller sneaker company. If it goes into trying to get sensor data from customers, now, whether they do it or not is a different issue. But they start with an advantage. And that's how you have to think about strategy differently. The bigger your value chain infrastructure, the greater your product footprint, the more powerful your digital ecosystems can become.
