The Importance of Separation in Democracy

When rulers have access to a relatively steady and easy source of income, like oil or natural resources, then they don't really need to build out big coalitions. It's much harder if you're resource rich, there's lots of money to pay off a small group of cronies. Even today, the wealthiest parts of Europe were the parts that signed the Concordot as opposed to those that didn't. If we look at places that foster competition, but not monopoly, we see people have better lives.
