The longer the Cold War is over, the more I read about how people cross seamlessly without any problems. But for many, it was getting to the border itself that was very, very difficult. One of the West's best spies in the Cold War was a Soviet KGB officer called Oleg Gordievsky. He'd been working for British intelligence from the 1970s and had an exfiltration plan worked out.
