Most people couldn't read and write. Most people would rely on the oral tradition to have things passed on. Probably about 10% of the population as we get towards the end of the dynastic age, nearly all men. A lot of the religion that went on was actually within the home. The big temples were not places of mass worship at all. They didn't have a congregation.
