In 17 87, some white american s imagined expanding the country a little bit westward. The idea of extending all the way across the continent to the pacific ocean really came in later years with things like the louisiana purchase. And so that began the process of expansion. Expansion was really driven, it turns out, economically by the expansion of the cotton growing industry.
