The Partisan Movement in Bulgaria During the Second World War
Bulgaria signed the tripartite pact with Nazi Germany, Hungary and Romania in World War II. The population of Bulgaria did not live under occupation so they were more willing to help anti-fascist resistance than other neighbors such as Greece or Yugoslavia. In Bulgaria, almost all of the partisans are Communists; a large percentage also Jewish because of deportations of Thracian and Macedonian Jews after invasion of Balkans. On September 9, 1944, there's an uprising in Bulgaria that ultimately leads to independence from Soviet Union.
