The loss of Normandy and the continental possessions in 1204 ends the Anglo-Norman Baronage. Until that point, there was still a elite in England who had landed Normandy,. In a way that must have affected their feeling of Englishness. Well, after 1204, that's no longer the case. All the great nobles in England are born in England and they live in England. So they can then share the Englishness of everybody else. And so that's the wider background to the ability of Montfort and other people to exploit this.
