There were people who never, perhaps, in some cases, quite fitted into peace time society. They wer regarded as eccentrics at work, and the walk provided them with a chance to step out of the shadows. So there were the directors themselves of the various institutions. And then there were the custodians themselves, the the people who took on these collections. One of my favourite characters is lady helena glycon, who gave a home to the tape galleries pictures at her manor house.
