The Importance of Judicial Restraint
In the filibuster era, you could see and you would know the lawyers who had expectations or desires to be a judge. One of the positive aspects is many of these people went out of their way to be seen as very serious and sober-minded. For example, they were not going to go into court and pitch hysterical fits. It's the John Roberts model, which you can complain about, but the JohnRoberts model is do as little as possible.
