Is the Quran a Fundamental of Islam?
I don't think most Muslim scholars thought that every answer to every question was in the Quran. What you have in the Quran are broad-based principles, and one of the greatest beauties of Islamic history for me is this focus very early on. That's what we're all supposed to be preserving. Everything else, whether it's slavery or religious freedom, those are just tactical manifestations that are open to debates and discussions. It's not a fundamental of Islam. Those five things are the fundamentals. And by that measure, what we're seeing in the West is that it's fully in keeping with what it means to be a Muslim. No Muslim is persecuted for being Muslim.
