The Excuses for the I-40 Border
There are a number of basically excuses that are thrown out for why the agencies chose the I-40 boundary. One of them is that they want this big buffer zone of several hundred miles between northern Rockies wolves in the north and Mexican wolves. But most actual geneticists who have worked on Mexican wolves have actually said that genetic rescue is actually much more important a concern than genetic swamping by northern gray wolves.
