There was a pay scale, much as there is in the roa navy to day. Seamen were offered five pounds and ordinary seamen two pounds and ten shillings. Those landsmen that hadn't maybe been to sea before, just got 30shillings. The most common punishment for mutinies or murder was flogging round the fleet. If you were guilty of mutiny or murder, you'd be hung from the yard arm.
