The 100 foot oak tree was supposed to be a symbol of Exxon's reverence for the surrounding landscape and the environment. But over the years, it lost leaves, it lost branches,. It got hit by lightning at least once. Employees started to joke. And eventually over Memorial Day 2021, the campus and the arborist removed the entire tree. Despite its outward appearance, it was dying inside.
