Silicon Valley Bank's Mistakes in the Financial Crisis
The bank over-concentrated by doing business predominantly with one industrial sector, technology companies. Second, it took the excess deposits and made an interest rate play by buying 10-year Treasuries instead of 30-day Treasuries. That is how the bank ended up collapsing. Was this preventable? Absolutely. And yet it happened anyway. The government was forced to step in and protect the banking system.
