The Taliban's Hard Line in Afghanistan
The Taliban had already forbidden Afghan women to work for local or NGO employers in December last year. Those working for the United Nations had a little more room for maneuver, at least until April when it was announced that they too were banned. Yogitar Limay has met many representatives of the Taliban since their return to power and often tried to take them to task over their continued hard line. As the country's economic situation worsens, the future of women's rights seems to have become a lever for the Taliban to wield in international negotiations.
