In the 15th century, churches all over England were installing sundials on their steeples. And they set their clocks with astrolabes - more accurate than clocks. So you've got all these different ways of keeping time at once. Any single or linear account of here comes the clock and everything else goes out the window simply doesn't explain the complexity of the system.
