The study of the Smilodon revealed that big teeth were not used in competition for access to reproduction. Big weapons slow you down, they get really awkward and you can't run fast or if you're a fish you can't swim fast. If you're a predator that's usually the end. And so once that sort of piece to the puzzle clicked I realized this is true everywhere.
