Historian Tracy Borman says Henry VIII was devastated by the loss of his warship. He had a close relationship with its commander George Carou, who died in battle. The king's first thought may have been to comfort Mr Carou's widow as she watched her ship sink. But he also put his arms around her and tried to console her in her grief.
