Do You Accept the Battle Between for and Against?
In 2014, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Washington Post pulled Americans to ask whether the US should respond with military intervention. Only one in six could find Ukraine on the map, but many still had strong opinions about US policy toward Ukraine. If we start with strong feelings, they can actually distort our understanding. This cognitive trap is called confirmation bias. We have to change the fundamental attitude with which we set out to learn.
