The PhD in Ancient Propaganda
When you got into history, was it more about the reliability of the Bible and now it's become more about the ethos question? Maybe. My PhD really grew out of not so much the sort of modernist questions of trying to prove the Bible or anything like that. But I was very pleased to do a history doctorate in a mainstream university and learn how to do history instead of just Bible exegesis. Which is perfectly wonderful in the pulpit but if you're trying to do history, you've got to do something more.
