How Many Times Has This Happened?
We are very closely related to that plant outside the window, at the level of our cells. We undoubtedly share a common ancestor. And by definition, that ancestor can only have arisen once. All this machinery in our own cells which goes wrong in medical in illnesses, we don't really know how any of it evolved. So there's a black regardless of whether any of these ideas are right or not,. It wouldn't be very surprising to find another type of cell - but we've spent an awful lot of time looking and haven't found anything.
