What Is the Average Peasant Able to Afford?
In almost every village of people with, say, 30 acres of land or a bit more, they are in a position to use their land to grow food. So, there is a sort of money economy there. And we know about that because when archaeologists dig up a village site,. they find buckles, broaches, little knives, you know, all sorts of things which have obviously not been made by the villager. They've obviously been made, in many cases, in a town. The poorest people actually handle more money than the others because they earn wages.
