The Galileo affair is a classic authority question. He turns his telescope to the sky in 1609, sees mountains on the moon and Jupiter's moons. That begins to confirm what has already been thought of for about 30, 40 years or so - there's something wrong with the Aristotelian universe. What was originally a quite a positive reception to Galileo turns very quickly into a negative perception. Protestants treat Galileo as the icon of Catholic obscurantism. And it becomes just this simple view of science versus religion.
