Introduction

New research suggests enhanced geothermal systems, or EGS, can play a much more dynamic and valuable role. If an EGS plant can store large amounts of energy for long periods of time and crank up its output when it is most needed, its value exceeds previous estimates by as much as 60 percent. A follow-up paper from the same team shows that EGS plants could end up playing a much larger role in a decarbonized energy system than previously envisioned.
