The Rise of Human Rights in the Global North

Anti-colonial movements were all about national sovereignty and freeing the local governments from interference by the imperial powers. But this seems to be something which is in some ways a reassertion of that imperial power, isn't it? It's undeniable that human rights activism emerged in the global north among people whose states engaged in imperial projects shortly before. There's no doubt that the idea of human rights was a strike against not so much or only sovereignty as a general idea but third world sovereignty.
