Wei Zhongshian became the 16th meaning emperor on October 2, 1627. He requested permission to retire a week after being enthroned but was refused. The throne was soon inundated with memorials denouncing some of his staunchest supporters. Wei and a close associate decided to hang themselves in the city of Fuchang.
