Mao, the Lenin and the Commonist Party
Mao was the lenin and the stalin for the chinese commonist party. So you couldn't do away with him entirely. The soviet union could undergo destalinization, which they did in the 19 fifties. But if you took away mal what did you have? You didn't have another figure that could substitute. They wove a narrative which had to accept mau was culpable of excesses. And it was quite remarkable, because i think the reforms that then were carried out in the 19 eighties could not have happened really, without the cultra revolution.
