She says monogamous marriage was solidified as ideal and central to both US and Canadian nation building indigenous peoples in these two countries were being viciously restrained inside colonial borders, institutions that included residential schools, churches and missions. These were all designed to save the man and kill the Indian by cutting the Indian off from the collective, she says.
