Venice is so important in the book, because of its insecurity. The ottomans came to te to the mediterranean, made it ottoman lake. And this is wheret the venetians are utterly reliant. This allowed me to introduce one of themo while the most remarkable characters in sixteenth century history: alvise griti - the son of the venetian doge. He's a remarkable rene late renaissance figure.
