I once did a video essay on gladiator and how it actually uses violence to sort of tell its story. I think ridley scott is really good at using spectacle in a meaningful way. In that film, you sort of have the comedist character, played by wakin phoenix, who is the evil sort of emperor. And then we see him thrown into this arena where people are basically cheering for him to do like, violence.
